We had a fab night here! Lake Lenthall is a budget priced camp near Maryborough, Queensland.
You’ll meet Ranger Rob – who was so helpful and full of knowledge. He and his wife were out today whipper snipping. They live onsite and really do take pride in the campground – it shows! The lawn was well tended, and the gardens looked lovely.
Every day, he opens the gate around 6am and closes it about 8pm. It is only 4 km from the grounds, but it is a rough, slow-driving road!

Built in 1984, Lake Lenthall is the main water supply for Hervey Bay, which is why there are signs for no swimming. It is the catchment for 6 creeks, including nearby campsite Wongi Waterholes – and the headwaters for the Burrum River system.
- No dogs or campfires but waterfront! (Birdlife was amazing – there is a protected quail in the bush. Huge heron like birds occupied the area – they did get a bit noisy through the night.
- Bring your kayak or boat – you can’t motor more than 6 knots/hour so there is no noise from jet skis or water skiing. Just some hopeful fishers!
- Catch a barra! Rob said this was the most southern dam stocked with barramundi. There weren’t biting yet for the season, but it starts soon.
- Budget priced (holiday rates were $28.50 for a couple, but it is normally $11 per person).
- Limited numbers – so if you are thinking about it, book now!
- There are toilets near the campground and boat ramp, then at the top day use area you’ll find another amenity block with cold showers, toilets and a sink area for washing up. There are 2 electric BBQs here as well, along with the pergola area and office.
- Bring the mosquito repellent or they will carry you away! They did not hassle us until sundown. But what a sunset it was over the water. We’ll be back to this little council run gem.
- Check out the viewing platform near the dam wall – and the Seaview Ranges.
