Favourite pet-friendly campground: Yelarbon Rec Ground, Queensland

When I used to work around Texas (last century!), there was a great little town that was on my schedule. If you are leaving on a trip or coming home via the Cunningham Highway there is an excellent camp area in the little town of Yelarbon that we recommend.  It’s between Warwick and Goondiwindi so is a good distance for us for a day’s run from Brisbane or the Sunshine and Gold Coast regions. Yelarbon Recreation Ground is away from the highway with lovely grounds.  Walk through the gate to the unpowered sites – there is a whole oval to choose

Take a sunflower trip

The Darling Downs in Queensland is THE place for sunflower drives. Sunflowers are a summer crop and only flower for 3-4 weeks. But you can find sunflowers from December to March and more on Darling Downs road trips.  For next season, pick your own at Warraba Sunflowers at Cambooya, Queensland. It is now closed. Tips: Please be respectful of farmers. Only go into properties if you have permission. Otherwise, take photos from the fence and enjoy that colour. More to see and do (from a local – Heatley grew up here, and our first bub was born in Toowoomba): Lake Leslie Goomburra State

Lake Leslie Dam Lookout, Queensland

2 camps at Lake Leslie, Warwick, Queensland

Lake Leslie Dam Lookout Heatley has never seen more water in Leslie Dam! I remember a picnic at Lake Leslie (as it is widely known) with his extended family (they lived locally). The creek area we all swam at has ‘no swimming’ signs there now – but it is still a lovely picnic area. We started at the lookout. For us, it was a perfect breakfast stop, as it wasn’t busy. We walked the dam wall… The spillway was super impressive! There is a nice picnic area here near the dam wall (with amenities). Make sure you stop and say

Camp Where The Wild Things Are

I’ve arrived home after my Murray River jaunt. It wasn’t all relaxing, though – I’ll have some wonderful SA camps and must dos for you over the coming weeks. It is also gratifying that my CAMPS Pendium state guides and I have only one state left to visit! This newsletter transports you to some lesser known gems in our beautiful country: bushcamp on a WA retreat for wedgetail eagles, beside a lake in Queensland’s Darling Downs and hike and camp on the NSW central coast. There is even a nude beach! From there, we travel back to Tassie to a wild,

FREEDOM CAMP OF THE MONTH – Sandy Creek Pub, Queensland

There were still a few campers around, and a couple of vans leaving when we dropped into Sandy Creek Pub, last week. You camp in the grassy paddock next door with some farm animals, and enter via a gate. The pub is not far from the Cunningham Highway, near Warwick in Queensland’s Darling Downs. We loved the sign here about patronising the hotel. The site is for patrons only, with a donation for charity and a fee for a shower. But it is great to find this freedom camp here, because the only other options in Warwick, are caravan parks.

Experience Gordon Country, Goomburra, Queensland

Image of Gordon Country, Queensland by Kyile Crothers Goomburra Scrub is a very special place for us – our first ever camping trip was here, and Heatley’s huge family hold famously fun picnics to celebrate annual holidays. Goomburra is part of the Main Range National Park, in the Darling Downs. It is on the western side of the Great Dividing Range. You’ll find Gordon Country outside the National Park area, 20 km east of Goomburra. It is pet friendly and allows all sorts of camping, including Big Rigs. There are toilets, showers, water, camp kitchen, dump point, shade and swimming!
