If you can’t stand the idea of leaving your dog behind and going on a camping trip, the good news is you don’t have to. There are campsites and rest areas throughout Australia that allow you to bring your best friend with you.

Camps 9 has over 3,000 PET Friendly sites listed

Caravan Parks Australia Wide has over 1,700 PET Friendly parks listed

Travelling with your dog is a great way to bond and is a special treat for them. The excitement they will experience from being included in your trip is priceless – they get the chance to stick their nose out the window, explore new places with new smells and, most importantly, spend time with their dearly loved owner.

Dog Camping Etiquette

Unfortunately the amount of campsites that allow furry companions has decreased due to owners who don’t respect other campers. Although it may not be enforced, you have certain responsibilities as an owner.

  • Pick up after your dog
  • Keep your dog on a leash (don’t leash your dog alone outside though)
  • Don’t take an aggressive and uncontrollable dog
  • Ensure there is an ID tag on his/her collar
  • Train your dog beforehand
  • Never leave your dog in a car on it’s own

Other Tips

  • Give your dog regular bathroom breaks, exercise and water during your travels.
  • Offer reassurance so they know they are safe.
  • Take a soft dog bed including some blankets from home.
  • Check for ticks and be attentive to health (us flee/tick collars or repellant).
  • Be on the lookout for snakes in summer and make sure your dog is securely on the leash when bushwalking.

Taking these tips and guidelines into consideration will make your trip much easier and ensure your fellow travels don’t get annoyed. Be a responsible pet owner and respect the campgrounds that have kindly allowed you to stay.
