The Great Ocean Road is one of the most well known road trip routes in Australia. But Victoria’s breath taking coast is just the beginning – there is so much to see in this state including historic sites, theme parks, wildlife, wineries and snow-capped mountains.

If you are on a tight budget, or simply want to save money for other activities, there are a range of free campsites throughout Victoria. Here are a few you might like to check out.

Reeves Beach Coastal Reserve

Reeves Beach

Located in a sheltered area on the southernmost part of Ninety Mile Beach, this campsite is a hidden gem. On Reeves beach you can spot dolphins or whales if you are lucky, go fishing, surf, swim or simply walk and take in the scenery. This is a popular spot in peak holiday periods so make sure you have a plan B if you are travelling during this time. Facilities are basic but there are wood BBQs available (BYO wood) and small campfires are allowed if there are no fire bans in place.

Victoria’s Alpine National Park is home to stunning wildflower’s in the warmer months and snowfields in the winter months. It is the biggest national park in the state and has an impressive range of flora and fauna to see. Manna Gum Camp is located on the edge of this beautiful area and offers plenty of shade for weary travellers. This site is best suited to short visits or people with a campervan or caravan because facilities are limited.

Loch Valley Campground is a pleasant place to stay with a large grassy area and plenty of shade. It can get very busy during holiday periods but most other times of the year it is quiet and peaceful. Loch River flows close by and you might come across a cheeky Kookaburra or two during your stay (they aren’t shy).

Muttonwood Camp is found on the edge of Victoria’s Wellington River amongst rolling hills. The river is ideal for swimming in summer with clear flowing water. Camp sites are well spread out and can be accessed easily by cars and campervans. This site is also located in Alpine National Park and there are plenty of bush tracks and beautiful scenery to explore if you are keen for an adventure.
